So the cat’s out of the bag, and the secret David and I have been keeping is revealed… come this fall, baby will make three!
We are so excited to finally be expanding our family, and it feels surreal to be into my 2nd trimester. I wanted to take a minute and share a bit, give y’all a pregnancy update.
Lots of people have asked how I’m feeling, and I’m relieved to be perkier now that I’m sixteen weeks. I was pretty ill the entirety of my first trimester- no appetite, nauseous all day long (for me, the phrase ‘morning sickness’ was a joke), and so so exhausted. My doctor prescribed diclegis, which helped me keep some meals down, but time helped the most. I’m still needing a nap most days, but the rest of the symptoms have mostly passed, and I’m so grateful for that.
Once the nausea passed, the cravings kicked in. There was a stir fried green beans phase, a spicy noodle phase, an ongoing pizza obsession, and a week where all I wanted was fried chicken. Even at my most nauseated, there are a few foods that have never failed me, though. I’m pretty sure this baby is actually a dumpling, specifically a juicy pork xiao long bao from Din Tai Fung. And when the doctor told me I needed more calcium I found a high-protein, high DHA, low fat chocolate milk and have developed quite the habit- I’m drinking about two gallons a week. And while I normally skip juice because it’s full of empty calories, it helped when I felt ill and I’m still loving all varieties- tangerine, pineapple, and tart cherry especially.
Obviously, we did a big announcement on Facebook and instagram last week, but we’d already told dozens of people by that point. I didn’t love making a big statement in person, for whatever reason- I preferred to slip it into the conversation and wait for the shock and realization. I wish we could have told everyone we loved in person, but it was simply not feasible- so there were more than a few calls and text convos. We told some people on Mardi Gras day, with the announcement that we’d gotten the baby in the king cake this year and this little snap..
And I sent a bunch of mini glitter bottles of One Hope Brut to close friends and family- decorating them left trails of glitter all over the house, but it was worth it for the enthusiastic reactions.
As far as what I’m wearing lately, I’d be lying if I said dressing myself is easy. I was trying to wear the roomier stuff I had in my closet, or purchase regular clothes a size or two up, but I’ve reached a point where that’s all pretty laughable, and if it’s not a glorified sack, it’s gotta be maternity clothes. I’ve struggled to find cute and comfy maternity clothes, but have had some good scores- I’ll be sharing the finds I love on instastories regularly. The chambray dress below is one of them- it’s Ingrid and Isabel and adorable at such a good price point!
We don’t know Baby Coe’s gender, and when and if we find out, we’ll be keeping it to ourselves. And his or her name will be embargoed till they are on the outside. And no, you won’t be able to convince me to tell you, that you can keep it a secret, or any such nonsense. We share lots of things really publicly, so it’s fun to have a few things that are just private for David and I.
I’ve also had lots of wondering if I’m going to become a mommy blogger now. I won’t be dismissive, but exclusively moving into baby-related content is really unlikely. I love fashion and beauty and skincare and food and travel, and will continue to do so as a mom. So while family will be another facet I add to the spectrum of topics I cover, I promise not to be one of those people who seems incapable of posting something that doesn’t involve their kid. I don’t find one-track content engaging as a reader, so it simply won’t be what I deliver as an editor.
We’ve got lots on the agenda in the five months till Baby! Our condo’s still in disarray from the move last year, so we need to get on getting it fully furnished and finished, and make it into a home. I need to clear out the terrifying pit of products and outdated clothes and random boxes that is my office, so we can turn that into a nursery. David’s headed for another ankle surgery (yes, I know) in May, which will put him back on crutches for 6 or so weeks, so he’s been busy refinishing furniture and working on his honey-do list before he takes up residence on the couch for a while.
But before that happens, we’re headed to Europe on a babymoon! We managed to work a little calendar magic and carve out the time to return to some of our favorite cities on the planet, Paris and Barcelona. We just finalized our flights this past weekend, and leave in less than two weeks, so I should get on booking some hotel rooms and making some reservations, like yesterday. We are so excited for all the eating, museums, shopping and strolling- two weeks in Europe is going to be a magical last hurrah!
