While my mom and I were in New York for a girl’s weekend earlier this summer, we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge to have a pizza comparison between Juliana’s and Grimaldi’s. It seems like a lot of work for pizza, but it’s about the exploration for me.
Juliana’s wins in my book, for what it’s worth. But as my mom and I meandered, I knew I’d want to come back to the Brooklyn Bridge with David, both for the adventure and the eats. So we totally made a return visit one morning during our last trip.
We woke up at the crack of dawn, which was a total struggle the morning after a delayed cross-continental flight. I was mighty cranky as I got ready for the day, and stopping for coffee as we headed towards the lower east side was nothing short of a necessity.
Getting caffeinated was super helpful, though, and the stunning early morning light did the rest. It was totally worth it- the bridge had heavy foot traffic when my mom and I visited, but it was nearly deserted this early in the morning. Some runners and commuters, a few security guards, a very polite vagrant, and us.
This darling little playsuit was perfect for sweltering New York City, and so easy to wear. It’s sold out right now, but I’ve linked some of my favorite floral shorts on the market so y’all can get the look. And I know it seems utterly ridiculous that I decided to wear heels to go walking, but these wedges are so comfortable that the 22k steps David’s Fitbit said we walked was no problem. And I get a ton of comments on how this purse matches my hair- it’s totally coincidental! This Kate Spade was a Chanukah gift from my mom back when i was a brunette, but I’ve tagged similar purses below.

We took our sweet time, taking tons of pictures as we walked, sitting and chatting overlooking the water. It was kindof surreal to be so close to noisy traffic yet still removed from it.
And once we were into Brooklyn, we arrived pretty quickly at 4 and 20 Blackbirds pie shop. I was so excited- I’d been wanting to go since I’d read the cookbook last year, but scheduling can be so impossible.
Making it happen was so worth it, though. We had delicious nectarine crumble and the most amazing salty honey custard, with a big mug of softly whipped cream. I felt totally at home, down to the fleur-de-lis on the walls. As I told David as we were leaving, if I lived in New York I’d be a regular.
