Once again, with feeling! I headed back to Butterfly Loft Salon to have my mane revamped with some fresh Pulp Riot color. I’ve honestly been so spoiled, working with ridiculously talented artists. This go round, Alexis Thurston (@alexisbutterflyloft) and Rickey (hairgod_zito) collaborated to make my childhood My Little Pony dreams come true.

bungalow encino zito loft hair kate spade salon day

I showed up at the salon, coffee in hand, for a day in the salon chair.  My previous color had faded to a rooty, silvery blonde, but the quinoa (I swear!)  and other nutrients in Pulp Riot, along with plenty of tlc, have kept it in pretty incredible shape. Needing to lift and even out the base for such vibrant fantasy color, we began with bleach. Lots of bleach- all the way to the root- I was a little afraid, but it was totally painless. To protect my hair and scalp, they always use Brazilian Bond Builder in with the bleach. I wouldn’t have basis for comparison, but it definately wasn’t nearly as awful as I’d feared.

salon mid style

In order to get the vivid translucence of Rarity’s mane, my hair needed to lift as light as possible.  Not sure platinum’s ever going to be my look, but it sure made for a few fun snapchats.

And then the hair painting began.  It takes some time, but the metamorphosis is so cool to watch, as it totally comes to life.  For the color formula curious, it’s obviously all Pulp Riot products.  My shadow root is Velvet, Smoke, and Noir. The lengths are Jam with a little Smoke, blending into Lilac, with accent highlights of Powder.

My color processed, was rinsed (icy water alwayssss!), dried and curled.  The early evening light was perfect photoshoot time, for an upcoming Pulp Riot magazine ad. Yes, I’d been there all day.

Luxyhair gifted me a lovely set of extensions, and Alexis (isn’t she stunning? and that hair!) and her assistant Jenn custom colormatched them to bring Rarity’s mane to the next level. Coloring this much hair is a major undertaking- just washing and drying it is a thing- and I’m so grateful for their patience.

I take my unicorn life really rather seriously ?. My hair’s almost metallic, in that the color varies depending on the light. It glows almost ultraviolet in sunlight, is moodier in the dark. The pops of blue are my favorite- they make braids and buns so fun!

hair-purple-don't-care.markedcartoon-ravayna.marked

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the passionate reactions my hair garners from people. Some think I’m absolutely insane, but I’ve been suprised and very flattered by the compliments. If I’m out and about, I can get stopped literally dozens of times with comments and questions.  It’s been an adjustment for this formerly wilting violet- I can be so shy, but I’m certainly getting less awkward at accepting compliments and interacting with strangers.

Much to my mama’s dismay, I can’t imagine going back to brown.  This is just too much fun!

my skincare regimen

I’m really particular about my skincare- you could say obsessive.  I’ve tried a variety of regimes, but in the past year it’s evolved into a multistep, flexible routine of mostly Asian skincare products. I’ve come a long way- I grew up wearing baby oil en lieu of sunscreen, used tanning beds, and made a habit of sleeping in my makeup in college. It all makes me so mad with my past self! I’m trying to undo the damage now, and prevent more wrinkles, while keeping my skin clear and even.

asian-beauty-UV-protection

Since beginning an Asian skincare regimen, I’ve been much happier with my skin, and comfortable wearing less or no makeup. I’ve had more than a few questions and comments,  so wanted to share what I’ve been using (unsponsored, though some links are affiliate) to care for my skin.

Skincare is incredibly personal, totally dependent on your body chemistry, and so ymmv. The best advice I can give when modifying skincare routines is to do your research, patch test thoroughly, and be patient and kind to your skin.

asian-beauty-products

Despite my devotion to Asian skincare products, I don’t presume to know much of anything other than what I’ve tried. So I’ve done a lot of learning from bloggers like Chel and Fiddy, their podcast the snailcast and the asian beauty subreddit.

One of the main ideas of Asian skincare is that it consists of a flexible wardrobe of products, and each day’s routine may vary, according to what your skin wants and needs.  Also, some times you have more time and energy than others. So I’ll first share the products currently in my skincare wardrobe, then I’ll break down the different routines I might use them in.

cleanse

asian beauty egg white bioderma

bioderma crealine micellar water tosowoong enzyme powder cleanser | su:m37 miracle rose cleansing stick | the face shop rice water bright cleansing light oil  | skinfood egg white pore foam

The evening double cleanse is a major tenet of Asian skincare- the first removes makeup, sunscreen and grime, while the second truly cleanses skin.  I almost always use the face shop cleansing oil as my first cleanser. The su:m37 rose stick is really gentle, so I alternate that with the enzyme powder cleanser. It’s often a location thing-  rose sticks are in the shower and my travel kit, powder is at the bathroom sink and in my gym bag.  I’ve mentioned my love for Bioderma before– I most often use it in the morning or to refresh my face after evening acids.

prep and tone

asian beauty first essence

cosrx aha/bha clarifying treatment toner | missha the first treatment essence | cosrx galactomyces whitening power essencehada labo gokujyn hyaluronic acid lotion

Toners can be totally different products with totally different purposes- it’s one of the more complicated parts of Asian beauty. The Cosrx is a ph-adjusting toner to be used before actives and other products to prep skin.  The Hada Labo is a moisturizing toner, layered on later in the routine.  The Missha used to be my favorite first essence, but I think the Cosrx galactomyces may have bumped it.

actives and treatments

asian beauty BHA a-sol

vitamin c +e ferulic acid serum | cosrx bha blackhead power liquid | cosrx aha whitehead power liquid | cosrx skin returning a-sol | prescription tretinoin | prescription clindamycin

These actives are the heavy hitters in my routine as far as sun damage and texture issues. The Vitamin C is my morning product, and the rest are used at night. The Cosrx products are really gentle, so I like that they don’t fry my skin even though I use them both most nights and I tend to be lazy about wait times.  I skip the pair sometimes, though, and use Retin-A, prescription tretinoin, instead. I use the A-sol morning and night regularly, but clindamycin is mostly a spot treatment.

 serums

asian beauty tea tree_

shark sauce (10% off through that link| tosowoong propolis sparkle ampoule | ljh tea tree 90 essence  | skinfood peach sake pore serum

My skin has really responded to layers of light products, so serums work fantastically. Shark sauce is a fabulous handmade co-op product, and has paired amazingly with the propolis serum to brighten skin and fade spots and marks- I’ve had some nasty red marks totally disappear with a little diligence. The tea tree serum helps fight blemishes, and the peach sake pore serum is great for mattifying on hot days.

moisturize

asian beauty snail embryolisse

mizon snail recovery gel cream | dr jart ceramidin cream | embryolisse  | guerisson 9 complex horse oil cream

With moisture, the name of the game is options.  Some of these feel lighter than others, while some are super emollient- I count on the Dr. Jart to save me from the peelies Retin-A can cause. The snail recovery gel is especially healing- great on scrapes and dried cuticles, and absolutely genius at healing burns with minor scarring.

seal and protect

asian beauty biore peter thomas roth

aritaum ginger sugar lip mask | laneige water sleeping pack | organic cold-pressed rosehip oil | biore watery essence sunscreen | biore uv perfect milk sunscreen |peter thomas roth mineral powder sunscreen

This overnight lip balm is amazing- it’s super rich, if a bit sticky, and still feels freshly applied when you wake up. I use the rosehip oil around my eyes and on dry patches, and keep the sleeping pack on my nightstand for one last layer of goodness.  And real talk- none of these previous products would have made the slightest difference were I not also using SPF religiously.  Sunscreen is a non-negotiable around here, especially since some of my actives can make my skin more photosensitive. The watery essence is my go-to, everyday- the texture is amazing, even under makeup. It’s not waterproof though, so I use the uv perfect milk if I need splash-proof protection. The powder sunscreen lives in my purse- it’s perfect for reapplication on the go and over makeup, and it’s not ashy at all!

masks

asian beauty skin food aztec

skinfood black sugar strawberry mask |  aztec secret healing clay | manuka honey | carbonated bubble clay mask

asian beauty face masks mr honey

cosrx acne pimple master patch | innisfree it’s real sheet masks | banila miss flower & mr. honey hydrogel  | lovemore loofah & aloe vera silk mask | benton snail bee sheet mask | mbd imperial birds nest masks

Y’all, I mask a lot.  Several times a week, sometimes a few different kinds in succession, or a multi mask. The first set are wash off, with sugar scrub, clay, and carbonation as active ingredients.  Manuka honey’s there too- it’s super healing and moisturizing all on its own.

If you follow me on snapchat ( loveRavayna ) you’ve likely seen me horrifying my seatmates with sheet masks on plane flights. I’m shameless when it comes to taking care of my skin, and I love a good sheetmask- my girlfriends know they can expect me to always have a few in my suitcase. And the Cosrx patches aren’t a mask, but a clutch tool in the overnight pimple battle.

asian beauty face mask

I’m also working on testing some new products and working them into the routine.  I’ve been loving Pixi glow tonic lately- I could see it replacing the Cosrx AHA long term. I’m trying a brightening eye serum, an old-fashioned drawing paste as a spot treatment, and a hydration mist,  and am liking them, but need a few more weeks to make sure. I also might have finally discovered some wipes that aren’t horrible for your skin, so I’ll be sure to update.

All the time, lotions and potions are paying off, though.  My skin has been looking much more even and vibrant, like I’ve said.  But the best validation has been at the Sk-11 counter, where a Magic Ring skin analysis a few years ago was the eye-opener to my sun damage and skin issues, though I tested at an accurate skin age of 28.   A more recent Magic Ring analysis returned much improved scores and an overall skin age of 22, so I’m literally managing to turn back the time over here.

.
Now, I obviously don’t use all these products all the time- I’d never make it anywhere.  But here are some of the sequences I might use them in.

In the morning:

most days, pre-makeup

  1. splash with water
  2. vitamin c serum- wait 20 minutes
  3. Bioderma on a cotton pad
  4. first essence
  5. tea tree essence
  6. shark sauce and propolis serum, mixed in my palm
  7. moisturizer of the moment
  8. sunscreen

I’ll skip the Vitamin C and wait time if I’m eyeing the clock, but try to make it happen most mornings.

if I’m staying at home and skipping makeup

  1. splash with water or use rose stick
  2. Vitamin C serum- wait 20 minutes
  3. Bioderma on a cotton pad
  4. first essence
  5. A-sol
  6. shark sauce
  7. Tosowoong propolis serum
  8. tea tree essence
  9. moisturizer of the moment
  10. sunscreen

if I’m headed to late morning spin class

  1. splash with water or use rose stick
  2. tea tree essence
  3. sunscreen

if I’m going straight to the gym

  1. splash with water or use rose stick
  2. Vitamin C serum
  3. powder sunscreen and/or baseball hat.

In the evening:

my base evening routine

  1. oil cleanse
  2. rose stick or enzyme powder cleanser
  3. Cosrx toner
  4. Cosrx AHA- wait 15 minutes
  5. Cosrx BHA- wait 15 minutes
  6. first essence
  7. A-sol
  8. shark sauce
  9. Propolis serum
  10. moisturizer

About 3 nights a week, I replace Cosrx acids with prescription tret, and add some more moisture

  1. oil cleanse
  2. rose stick or enzyme powder cleanser
  3. first essence
  4. A-sol
  5. shark sauce
  6. Hado labo toner
  7. Propolis serum- wait 5 min
  8. Retin-A – wait 15 minutes
  9. Dr. Jart cream
  10. rosehip oil
  11. sleeping pack

if I have time to pamper

  1. black sugar strawberry or bubble clay wash off mask
  2. rose stick or enzyme powder cleanser
  3. Cosrx toner
  4. Cosrx AHA- wait 15 minutes
  5. Cosrx BHA- wait 15 minutes
  6. first essence
  7. A-sol
  8. shark sauce
  9. propolis serum
  10. Hado Labo toner
  11. sheet mask
  12. moisturizer
  13. rosehip oil
  14. sleeping pack

if I’m totally exhausted

  1. oil cleanse
  2. rose stick or enzyme powder cleanser
  3. A-sol
  4. shark sauce and propolis serum, mixed in my palm
  5. moisturizer

And I’m always more diligent the day after a lazy night.

unicorn hair

unicorn-lavender-hair

If you follow me on snapchat (loveRavayna) or instagram, you may have peeped my new ‘do… and realized that I’ve upgraded my lifelong brunette hair to a multicolor pastel mane. Letting my inner unicorn out to play, I’m giving My Little Pony a run for her money.

unicorn-hair-silver unicorn-hair-purple-flip

A color melt of silver and smoke, lilac, lavender, and rose, slate and sapphire- my hair is practically a work of art! I’m obsessed with it, to be honest. Butterfly Loft Salon was kind enough to have me in as a model for an incredible new vivid haircolor line, Pulp Riot. I’d been feeling blah about my hair for a while, so was ready for something fresh.

salon 6 salon 1

I’m so, SO fortunate to have worked with such an amazing team. Linh Phan is one of the artists behind the Pulp Riot brand, and is incredible- he manipulates hair color like watercolor. He envisioned my hair as a smoky lavender, with peeks of slate and rose gold. I was wound tight about bleaching it half to death, but he assured me that careful application and B3 reconstructor would help preserve my mop. I trusted him, along with his precious assistant Niki, so I turned over creative control to the talented pair, accepted a cocktail and settled in for a beast of a bleaching. All told, I was at the salon for almost eight hours, and it was worth it.

salon 2

Four hours in, they’d lifted my lengths from a level 3 to a level 9 and darkened my roots with a granite color, and I’d recognized that life as a blonde is not a good choice for me. The Butterfly Circus environment is so supportive, and I loved the creative collaboration from all the talented stylists. After a little powwow, it was hair painting time.

salon 5 salon 3

Linh popped in his headphones and got down to the nitty gritty, rocking out as he melted metallic pastel colors into a deep blue root, yet preserved the clarity of icy silver ends.  I was processed, rinsed and styled- and was blown away when I finally saw the reveal. So grateful for these talented darlings!

salon 4 matching-unicorn-hair-nails unicorn hair purple

I’ve never before taken such a leap with my look, but it is exhilarating! I will note that I’m surprised by just how much attention it garners- strangers regularly comment and compliment, which is incredibly flattering but totally unexpected in a city like LA.

unicorn lavender hair angel wings unicorn-blue-hair-angel-wings-dlta unicorn-blue-hair-war-paint-wall

I find myself wanting to wear more black than ever, and have had to stop myself from color-coordinating my clothes and hair… I love me some mitchy-matchy. I’m still a huge fan of these ear jackets, via my beloved Stella & Dot stylist (don’t hesitate to shop with her) and am always into the perfect Schiaparelli pink lipstick.

A mane like this is so fun to style- straight or curly, the color adds so much dimension. And though I’ve noticed some bleach dryness, the damage has actually given my lank hair a welcome volume boost. I swear I must be  prepping for a shampoo commercial with all the hair tossing I’ve been doing lately.

flat lay

It may just look pretty pink and blue, but color like this takes serious work to maintain.  Fantasy colors are not permanent, so they fade with every wash- though freezing water and color care products like this shampoo, conditioner, and reconstructor from B3 help. Violet shampoo keeps the color icy, and pastel purple overtone helps up the lilac level. You can probably spot the fade (specifically of the navy and rose shades) in the above pictures- the black sequin shots were taken two washes after the images in the black teeshirt. I’m loving the evolution!

With hair color like this, a ponytail pops and a simple braid becomes a statement. It’s without a doubt my favorite accessory for the spring!

my favorite spring nail polish colors

I’m not sure if it’s come up previously, but I’m a bit of a nail polish fanatic.  I started polishing my nails regularly to help quit biting them, and over the years I’ve gotten obsessive over my manicures.  I almost always do my own nails, once or twice a week,  and have amassed quite the nail polish collection.

flat-lay-painting-nail-polish

I find myself swapping out my winter go-to dark and neutral polishes as spring hits here in SoCal. A bit of a hodgepodge- pastels, shimmers, brights… there are just so many pretty options!  Here are some of the nail polishes I’m loving for spring.

lilacism-essie-nail-polish
Essie ‘Lilacism’ is a fresh, saturated pastel lilac creme.  It practically screams spring, but is totally wearable…  I’m especially loving it with denim and black.

bubble-bath-opi-nail-polish

Honestly, I love OPI ‘Bubble Bath’ year ’round- I’ve been wearing it since high school.  It was the first polish I ever finished, and this is like bottle #5. It’s the perfect pinky-neutral sheer for my complexion.

blanc-essie-nail-polish

Essie ‘Blanc’ is definitely a contender for my warmweather  favorite. I love its stark, clean, brightness, especially with a tan. Opaque white polish is not for everyone- my sweet auntie asked me if I was wearing white-out on my nails- but I’m a huge fan of the look. A lot of white polishes go on patchy and streaky, but not this one.

dior-water-lily-nail-polish

Dior Waterlily is a gorgeous mint with a hint of iridescent shimmer. Dior Beauty polishes smell like roses, which I adore, but  unfortunately this was a limited edition and is only available through channels like eBay. Chanel Jade is similar but also hard to find, but Sinful Mint Apple is easily available in drugstores and not too far off.
china-glaze-first-mate-nail-polish

China Glaze ‘First Mate’ is a creamy muted navy, almost a little dusty. Yet it’s bright enough to read as distinctly blue, rather than blackish. It’s super-saturated and perfect in just two coats.

penny-talk-essie-nail-polishI adore all things rose gold, and Essie ‘Penny Talk’ is no exception. It’s glowy and pretty, but not blingy, a beautiful metallic blush. But it’s amazing on fair and deep complexions too, and I love it for pedicures as well.

sunday-funday-essie-nail-polish

Essie ‘Sunday Funday’ is a bright jelly coral polish- I’m wearing it currently and loving it. With a light dusting of tiny glass fleck glitter, it glistens in the light, but it’s gently sparkly, not a disco ball.

What other polishes are you into for spring? Send some recommendations for your favorites my way!

lipstick amuse bouche

I’ve been into lipstick for as long as I can remember. In second grade, Mrs. Fouchecourt had to take away my Cherry Chapstick, for “over-applying and being a distraction.” ??  Nowadays, I have slightly more self-control, but I still keep at least three or four lipsticks in my purse-kit at any given time. So when Influenster and Bite Beauty sent me a box of their lipsticks to check out, I was happy to add them to the rotation.

bite-lipstick-beauty-flower-marble

I recieved Pepper, Beetroot, and Gazpacho (left to right) and was relieved to find them all really wearable! The colors are saturated and buildable, and the lipstick is almost as comfortable to wear as a balm.

bite-lipstick-pepper bite-lipstick-pepper-2

Pepper is one of those ‘your lips but better’ neutrals and I dig it. It doesn’t read too brown with the olive in my skin, and I can swipe it on sans mirror.

bite-lipstick-beetroot-2 bite-lipstick-beetroot bite-lipstick-beetroot-3

Despite feeling ‘meh’ about the vegetable, I think Beetroot is my favorite of the lipsticks. The deep berry color is rich, but not too in-your-face, and the sheen keeps it feeling relaxed.

bite-lipstick-gazpacho bite-lipstick-gazpacho-3 bite-lipstick-gazpacho-2

Almost vermillion in the tube, Gazpacho surprised me by going on deeper and more neutral, a true red. I’m a perpetual sucker for a classic red lip.

bite lipstick beauty

I’m still really tan from our trip to Trinidad, and all of these lipsticks played well off that. They wore well for four-ish hours and then faded slowly and evenly, but they’re easy to reapply. Beetroot and Pepper are both in my purse right now, so there’s that. Bite Beauty makes great products, that I regularly purchase at Sephora (loved their discontinued double-ended lipsticks!) so I’m glad to have added these new lipsticks to the makeup arsenal.

Disclosure: I received these lipsticks as a complimentary gift from BITE Beauty and Influenster; all content and opinions are my own.

the friday five  003 a braid-y bunch

braids-backyard

When I wrote my #15in15 earlier this year, I set a goal of learning to dutch braid. It took a decent amount of practice, but I’ve learned and then some! I’ve been wearing a variety of different styles and shapes of braids,  while in Europe, at the farm, and pretty much all the time.

braids-merci

farm-greentomsforbraids

braids-paris

David even papped me braiding on the go- I thought he was taking pictures of architecture, but not so much.

I’m not claiming to be any kind of braid guru, I’m just a beginner. But today I’m passing on a little guidance, as I acquaint you with some of the hair vloggers from whom I’ve picked up my fancy braid skills.

braids-backwindow

Twist Me Pretty

Abby actually wrote a braiding ebook- girl really knows her stuff. She also introduced me to a favorite product for braiding, Kenra Platinum Texturizing Putty. As someone without a ton of hair, I don’t always want to wear my extensions, and most of her styles don’t need them. Her upbeat but not saccharine attitude and stinking adorable family (especially those twin baby boys)  are also points in Abby’s ‘pro’ column.

Cute Girls Hair

Mindy is mom to four daughters, and therefore has lots of hair to do.  She and her girls span ages, hair length, and hair texture, so there are lots of diverse styles demonstrated. Their specialty is styles that can be done in less than five minutes, which is awesome for any girl on her hustle, regardless of age.

braidcrop1

Kirsten Zellers

She’s strikingly beautiful, and has the most amazing mane of icy lavender-silver hair- it makes me want to race to the salon, bleach my hair out and rinse it pale pastels. With that gorgeous color, I’m pretty sure she could tie it in knots and it would still be swoonworthy, but it seriously upgrades her braids to fairy tale status.

The Small Things Blog

Kate was one of the first vloggers I came across.  She seems incredibly down to earth, and breaks things down into manageable steps really effectively. It sounds ridiculous to even watch the tutorial, but her lived-in messy bun video is super useful for a topknot that appears full and sloppy, but isn’t tangled into an actual knot below the surface. She teaches in-person braiding and curling classes near her hometown in Raleigh… I’ve always thought attending one would be so fun!

Screen Shot 2015-11-13 at 1.15.16 AM

Barefoot Blonde

With a sheet of long, blonde hair, Amber incites hair envy with fat, lush braids. But she owns that it’s comprised of lots of extensions, and I appreciate knowing that from the outset. Her tutorials can be a bit rambly, but it’s nice not to have to rush to keep up with a hyperspeed video. Her directions for hiding my extensions within braids were really useful, and I wear what she calls a fishhook braid often.

Screen Shot 2015-11-13 at 1.23.10 AM

I follow all of these lovely ladies on Instagram as well. I love speedy braid videos and micro-tutorials, plus the eye candy of some simply beautiful braids. And I’m still learning- working on a dutch fishtail now, but it’s tangly going!

the friday five     001

Introducing a new series today. Pretty self explanatory, it’s a roundup. Topics will range, but today these are five of my favorite tested-and-true beauty products. Read on…

Charming Charlie baby backs are perfect if you love a statement earring like I do. These squishy silicone, super supportive earring backs keep even the saggiest stud earring perfectly in position. I’m also convinced they help prevent my earring holes from stretching out, but that might be hopeful thinking.

Living Proof Prime Style Extender.  This was one of those products I sampled multiple times out of scepticism, but it really does make a difference in how long my blowouts last- an extra day, sometimes two, and a little goes a long way! If you’re a member of the shower cap and dry shampoo corps, this product might be for you.

Bio-oil. I’ve been using this since my teens, because it’s amazing, inexpensive, and accessible. It moisturizes dry skin and cuticles, erases stubborn mascara smudges, and with consistent use, really fades scars. It even worked on my angry red and purple stretch marks, and some nasty surgery scars, so it’s pretty much the holy grail.

Shadow Shields.  I love using these on clients and myself to avoid eyeshadow fallout.  They make great guidelines if you are a little unsteady flicking your eyeliner into a cat’s eye, and also just keep more dramatic looks tidy.

Sonia Kashuk hairbrush. This is supposed to be the closest possible thing to the legendary Mason Pearson brush. Since David would check me for a fever if I tried to spend hundreds on a hairbrush, I cannot confirm nor deny. But I’ll say this: I don’t normally feel passionately about hair tools, but I really love this brush. Enough to own two, for home and on the go. Detangle, blow dry, tease, smooth, all done perfectly- and the mixed bristles allow for an amazing head massage. The Sonia Kashuk brand is a Target exclusive … as if you needed the excuse to head for the red.

Have a great weekend!
