Helping LA wildfire victims:  resources to share and support

Hi friends.

Los Angeles is a sad and scary place to be right now. Our family is fortunate to be in the flats away from immediate danger currently, but we have spent the last day packed and ready to evacuate. The winds have been merciless on the dry terrain, and the amount of the damage is beyond heartbreaking. We know so many people who have lost everything- homes, businesses, schools, who escaped with only their lives and the clothes on their back. It’s currently estimated that more than 50,000 people are displaced and more that 6000 properties, many of them uninsurable, have been burned across more than 45 square miles.

In situations like this, I’m always so grateful for helpers, for those with generosity of spirit, and have had so many conversations about how best to help. Rather than just sharing resources on social and in discussions, I wanted to collect them in one place.

I’ll be continuing to update this post.  Please share widely, give generously, and stay safe out there. love, ravayna

Opportunities for impact:

The team at @MutualaidLA has built out a comprehensive spreadsheet tracking all of the shelters, food kitchens, evac sites, resources for anyone impacted by these massive wildfires, and cross-referenced them with volunteer opportunities. As the situation evolves, this continues to be one of the most accurate sources.

If you are able to make financial donations, we know from past California wildfires, hurricanes and volunteering experience that directly donating to people is far more powerful and impactful than giving to an organization such as the Red Cross. Evacuees need support now, for gas and lodging and protective gear, to replace clothes and supplies, for medication and meals.  Soon, they’ll need to repair, rebuild, and/or relocate.

HERE is an ongoing list of all verified GoFundMe pages. Pick a family or a few to support.

This list specifically collects GoFundMe pages of black families who have been devastated by the Eaton Fire.

If you know a fire victim or evacuee personally, send them direct venmos or PayPal- I guarantee you they will able to use it to protect or support themselves, a displaced community member, or a local fire brigade.

You can also send digital gift cards via email, text, or even via a link via dm.

Local LA resources for victims

World Central Kitchen is feeding firefighters across the county- meal distribution sites are here, and you can donate to support their efforts here.

Many brands are offerring new or replacement product, services and funds. Those brands and their access details are organized here, along with a request email template.

For accurate updates, you can use the app watch duty  or  CAL FIRE active fire incident map to monitor ongoing fires,

Victims, please apply for disaster relief now through FEMA

And it’s so important to manage media intake and output right now- I’ve seen some wild discourse, so many people unknowingly sharing AI images, misinformation, hot takes and cheap shots. This is a time where grace is a gift, but being factual matters,  so please check your sources and your biases as ravaged communities work through tragedy and attempt to continue on.

UPDATES:

As of 1/9, the airbnb and 211 voucher program I previously shared has been exhausted.

visiting our animal friends

We have teamed up with Wells Fargo. Thank you for supporting the companies that make LoveRavayna possible.

The weather is lovely in LA this time of year, and the heavy rains earlier this spring have revitalized our green spaces for the first time in several years. It’s beautiful to see, and it makes certain little alcoves of the city into nature escapes. Griffith Park’s been looking especially inviting lately, so we thought it was time for Asher’s first trip to the zoo!

blush and black

If you’ve hung around here more than a minute, you know I am all about the pretty pink shades- on clothes, lips and nails and even on my head. Blush and bashful really are my favorite colors, but I love grounding them with black for wintertime looks, like this one, brought to you in partnership with my friends at Zaful.

a skincare soirée

You all know how seriously I take my skincare, and how important it is to me that it not only feel luxurious, but also be effective. I like science behind my skincare. So I was super excited to have an opportunity to host some of my favorite blogger girlfriends and get to introduce them to the loveliness that is Thann skincare, a line that hails from Thailand.

shorts season

If we had gone shopping together five, ten or even fifteen years ago, I never ever would have considered this darling little romper, or one like it.  No insult, I would have just wondered what it would be like to be comfortable in shorts, and walked past the rack. If you had asked me point blank, I would have told you that I ‘didn’t do shorts.’

a staycation in venice

Right before we moved, we escaped the packing madness for a short staycation near the beach. The Kinney in Venice was kind enough to host us for a little respite, and it was so nice to run away from the mess. It blows my mind just how endless packing was- such a beating. Comparatively, the Kinney was heaven on earth!

smorgasburg la

purple hair fantasy braid

I was so excited for us to finally be home and unscheduled on a Sunday so we could go eat at Smorgasburg. I love food trucks and food halls and all delicious food, so I was seriously jazzed to get my fat little fingers into all the yummy offerings.

During the week, this space is the wholesale produce market, so I’ve been before when shopping for jamming or a pie party.  Then, it’s been crowded with crates of produce, but I’ve never seen this many people at the Bay before.

We were hungry, so we beelined for a legendary ramen cheesburger.  It was INCREDIBLE- crispy and chewy and savory and it honestly disappeared in just a few bites and I was sad I had to share it with David and contemplated getting right back in line for a second round. It totally lived up to the talk.

We moved on to artisan mozzarella sticks and that was a very good life choice.  We skipped the beer garden, because I had left my ID in my purse from the night before. I wasn’t brokenhearted, because I’m not a beer lover and David was driving, so I wandered off to do a little shopping.

I was pleasantly surprised at the caliber of the shops – there is obviously an application process, because all the vendors were diverse and quality. I went in for sunnies and caftans at Coast to Coast vintage, and eyed this holo swell for quite a while at beautiful things.

Another sandwich round was up next for us, with a pork belly Banh Oui. I know fusion isn’t perfectly authentic, but this was one of the best pork belly sandwiches I’ve ever had, perfectly balanced and so mouthwatering!

As we moved on to sweets, I had to go full out for the coconut bowl at Amazebowls. It was super gorgeous, but if i’m being honest I make tastier ones – some of the edible flowers were super bitter. And it was pretty tiny for the price, so I might hack these at home soon.

I chose blackberry kaffir lime at Paloma’s Paleta’s, and it was both super delicious and very photogenic- and super refreshing, because it was so. freaking. hot. out there.

There’s a ton we didn’t get to eat, but we’ll be back soon, probably right after our next NYC trip! And I’m eyeing the soft shell chili crab sandwich, some biscuits, and a ramen burger repeat. So much goodness- if I wouldn’t outgrow my clothes, I’d go every Sunday!

WiW: blush and black

crop-top pasadena wordship hall hottie

This blush and black ensemble has been one of my favorites lately. I’ve worn it to multiple birthday dinners, including my own, and to a handful of pageant events in different cities. When I like an outfit, I have no problem repeating and remixing for different audiences.

One of those times, before our friend Mike’s birthday dinner,  I got to feel all fancy as Janah got my face all glowy and prettified.  It felt so luxurious to relax and laugh while someone else did the work, and she was so fun to hang with!

We went for a dewy look, nothing too heavy, and I loved the way it all came out.  I’m wearing these three highlighters, this lipstick, and double-stacked lashes.

I’d been lusting after this Givenchy cape when I found this cape blazer online, at Target of all places! It’s from the Who What Wear collection there. Once I spotted the blazer, I scoured the collection and grabbed the skirt (the blush is sold out!)  as well. Each was under $40, so pretty painless.

Y’all know I’m all about the accessories. I’ve been obsessed with my north star earrings since I got them for my birthday, and I added a pearl ring as well. My heels are Betsey Johnson from several years ago, but the blush straps, black lace accent and classic style are totally still in my rotation.
