I’ve mentioned this before, but one of the things I always wanted to do with my future child(ren) was raise them to be readers. So we shopped for and were generously gifted loads of books when I was pregnant, have frequented the library, and make sure to have plenty of reading time every single day. I’m thrilled that it seems to have taken root! Asher carries books all over the house, whether he’s climbing onto my lap to read one, flipping through it solo, or demanding to take it to bed with him for ‘night-night.’ It’s the cutest!
I feel strongly about the books we read and the ideas we expose Asher to. From the earliest possible age, we want to instill kindness, generosity, acceptance, support, equality, and pride, among other qualities, in him. The books we choose help us do that, so I wanted to share some of our favorites with you.
Asher adores the little feminist book set– they are sized just right for him to carry around the house and we find them everywhere. He can flip through the thick pages all by himself, and they stack into the case so they are everything he loves.
A is for Activist is so well written and beautifully illustrated. It’s a longer read for a board book, but the vibrant images and alphabet keep Asher engaged all the way through.
Love is a personal favorite of mine- it gives me warm fuzzies, and I like that there isn’t a hard hitting focus on diversity in the sweet story, it is simply innate in the text and lovely illustrations.
We’re a houseful of allies, so A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo was was a great baby gift for us, and I’ve now gifted it several times myself. I especially like that 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Trevor Project and AIDS United.
My family is from Trinidad, and we’re Jewish, so I definitely wanted to see that represented on Asher’s bookshelves. The Skin You Live In is such a cheerful celebration of multiculturalism.
Linking a few others as well that are currently on my wishlist for Asher- let me know if you have any more suggestions for me!
